Individual & Family

Health insurance for you and your family

Whether an ACA Marketplace plan or a private option is the better fit, we compare both and find the most affordable coverage for your situation.

Who Marketplace plans are great for

  • Self-employed people, freelancers and gig workers who don't have job-based coverage
  • Early retirees who aren't old enough for Medicare yet
  • People between jobs who want an alternative to expensive COBRA
  • Young adults turning 26 and coming off a parent's plan
  • Families whose employer coverage is too expensive to add a spouse or kids

What every Marketplace plan covers

All ACA plans cover ten categories of essential health benefits, including:

  • Doctor visits, emergency care and hospital stays
  • Prescription drugs
  • Pregnancy, maternity and newborn care
  • Mental health and substance use treatment
  • Lab tests, rehab services and pediatric care, including children's dental and vision
  • Preventive care, like checkups and many screenings, at no cost when you use an in-network provider

How to pick a plan level

Plans come in metal levels. The difference is how you and the plan split costs, not the quality of care.

  • Bronze: lowest monthly premium, highest costs when you get care. Good if you rarely see a doctor and want protection from big bills.
  • Silver: moderate premium and costs. If your income qualifies, Silver plans come with extra savings that lower your deductible and copays.
  • Gold: higher premium, lower costs when you get care. Good if you see doctors often or take regular medications.
  • Platinum: highest premium, lowest out-of-pocket costs. Not available in every area.

Help paying for coverage: Many households qualify for a premium tax credit that lowers your monthly payment, based on income, household size and plan prices where you live. We calculate this for you before you choose a plan.

ACA or private: we'll find the better fit

You don't have to figure out which type of plan is right for you. We look at your household, income, doctors, prescriptions and budget, then recommend the most affordable option for your situation, whether that's an ACA Marketplace plan or a private plan.

Questions about individual & family plans

Can I be turned down because of a pre-existing condition?

No. Marketplace plans cannot deny you coverage or charge you more because of a health condition you already have, like diabetes, asthma, pregnancy or cancer.

What if my income changes during the year?

Report the change and your tax credit can be adjusted, which may raise or lower your monthly premium. Keeping your income up to date helps you avoid owing money at tax time. We can help you update it.

Can I keep my doctor?

It depends on the plan network. Before you enroll, we check which plans include your doctors, hospitals and prescriptions so there are no surprises.

What if I might qualify for Medicaid?

If your income is low enough, Medicaid or CHIP may be a better fit than a paid plan, depending on your state. We will tell you if that is the case and point you in the right direction.

I just lost my job coverage. What are my options?

We will compare COBRA, ACA Marketplace plans and private options side by side so you can see which is most affordable for your situation. A Marketplace plan is often less expensive than COBRA, especially if your income has dropped.
